Braces- a Smile is always in Style

Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This can lead to tooth decay, worsen gum disease and subsequent tooth loss. Orthodontic problems also contribute in abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, inefficient chewing, excessive stress on gum tissue and the bone supporting the teeth, or misalignment of the jaw joints. These can lead to chronic headaches and face or neck pain. Orthodontic treatment can be less costly than the other dental care procedures required treating dental problems resulting from orthodontic problems. For majority of individuals, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics. Once braces are off, you’ll have more self-confidence and social acceptance.

When treatment is begun early, the jaw growth and eruption of incoming permanent teeth can also be guided at times. Early start can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches to accommodate permanent teeth, also gain space for permanent teeth, at times avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions later on, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. Lingual braces are placed on the inner surface of the teeth rather than the front surface thereby making them completely invisible. They do cost more than the standard braces but are ideal for situations where the case is too complex for clear aligners or the patient desires absolute invisibility of the treatment. Ideal for people in the hospitality industry, in media and other professions where aesthetics plays a major role or professionals who want to hide their braces and not their smile.

The only drawback is that it can be used in very selected cases where there is only mild to moderate problem with the teeth. Models of your teeth are made over which is subjected to the latest technology where a computer simulation is made of your postulated tooth movements. As per the simulation clear aligners are then fabricated incorporating these staged tooth movements. Aligners can also be removed with ease at your own leisure and can also be used for bleaching at the end of your treatment.

At the end of the treatment retainers are provided to stabilize the teeth in their new position and prevent them from moving. They can be removable or bonded as per the clinical requirement. Removable ones can be of two types conventional plates or clear as shown in the picture. Bonded retainers comprise of a thin wire bonded on the back side of the teeth.

How Orthodontic treatment works

How-Orthodontic-treatment-worksOrthodontic appliances or braces as conventionally called can be of metal, ceramic or plastic. They can be removable generally used in kids as habit breaking appliances, space regainers, arch expanders or post treatment retainers or they may be fixed where brackets are bonded to the teeth.

In fixed appliances or braces a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction is applied by the wires and brackets which slowly move teeth to a corrected position. The movements are gradual and thereby it takes time to complete the treatment process. Once the teeth have moved to the desired position the teeth are stabilized in that particular position by fixed or removable means.

Today the times have changed and it’s a great time to wear braces! Now You can choose brackets that are clear or metallic color or completely invisible (lingual). In Metallic braces one can even choose the  color of the ties that hold the wire in brackets to suit your mood.

Today the Wires are also less noticeable than they used to be and the latest materials move teeth faster with less discomfort to patients.

Duration of treatment

glassTreatment duration can range from one to two years to as per the growth pattern of the patient’s mouth and face, age of treatment and the type and severity of the problem. People grow at different rates and respond variously to orthodontic treatment, so the time taken for case completion may differ at times from the original expected estimate. The patient’s compliance in use of any prescribed rubber bands is also an important factor in achieving the most efficient treatment in expected time. Interceptive, or early treatment procedures undertaken in kids are of generally shorter duration and may take as few as six months.
