Fluoride Application

Fluoride application is the topical delivery of fluoride to the teeth to prevent ttoth decay which leads to cavity. Fluoride controls the decay by the formation Fluorapatite in enamel. The fluoride ions reduce the rate of tooth enamel demineralization, and increase the rate of remineralization in the early stages of cavities. The mode of application can be gels or varnishes as per the clinical requirement. The various indications are:

  • Children in the age groups of 6-7 years,9-12 years and 13-14 years at the times of permanent tooth eruption
  • Moderate to high risk patients for developing decay
  • Active decay
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Additional protection if necessary for children in areas without fluoridated drinking water
  • To reduce tooth sensitivity
  • Protect root surface
  • Decreased salivary flow
  • Institutionalized patients
It is a simple procedure and just takes 5-10 mins.
